FG Urges States to Take Ownership of National Water Compact 2026-2030

The Federal Government has called on Nigeria’s 36 states and the FCT to take greater ownership of the draft National Water Compact 2026-2030, built around three pillars: water for people, food security and the planet.

The Federal Government has called on Nigeria’s 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory to take greater ownership of the draft Nigeria National Water Compact 2026-2030, describing their participation as critical to strengthening the country’s water security.

The Minister of Water Resources and Sanitation, Professor Joseph Terlumun Utsev, made the call on Friday in Abuja at a nationwide stakeholders’ consultation workshop on the draft compact. He said the document is structured around three key pillars: Water for People, Water for Food Security, and Water for the Planet, and is intended to guide interventions in the sector through 2030.

Utsev identified rapid population growth, urbanisation, climate change, inadequate infrastructure and institutional fragmentation as major challenges facing Nigeria’s water sector, and urged states to scrutinise the draft and submit recommendations, describing it as a national instrument rather than one belonging solely to his ministry.
