NPFL, NNL, NWFL Chairmen Sacked Amid Wider NFF Leadership Shake-Up

The chairmen of Nigeria's top domestic football leagues have been removed less than 24 hours before the new NPFL season kicked off, as part of the broader shake-up following the NFF board's resignation.

The chairmen of Nigeria's top domestic football leagues, including NPFL chairman Gbenga Elegbeleye, NNL chairman George Aluo and NWFL chairman Nkechi Nneka Obi, have been removed from their positions, less than 24 hours before the new NPFL season kicked off on Friday, August 28, 2026.

The changes form part of a wider shake-up in Nigerian football administration following the resignation of Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) President Ibrahim Musa Gusau, General Secretary Mohammed Sanusi and the rest of the federation's Executive Committee earlier in the week. The National Sports Commission has approved Dr Emmanuel Ikpeme to oversee the NFF secretariat as Acting General Secretary.

Despite the leadership upheaval, the NPFL season proceeded as scheduled. All chairmen, directors and chief executives of the NPFL, NNL, NWFL and Nationwide League One have been directed to hand over to the incoming administration as reforms continue.
