NIHSA Denies Lagdo Dam Release, Blames Flooding on Heavy Rains
news
The Nigeria Hydrological Services Agency has denied claims that Cameroon released water from the Lagdo Dam, saying recent flooding in parts of the country is instead due to heavy rainfall.
The Nigeria Hydrological Services Agency (NIHSA) has denied reports that Cameroon released water from the Lagdo Dam, clarifying that recent flooding affecting parts of Taraba and Benue states is instead the result of heavy rainfall within Nigeria.
The clarification follows an earlier alert issued in August warning of a possible release from the dam and urging affected states to take precautionary measures. NIHSA said no formal notification of a release had been received from Cameroonian authorities as of Sunday, August 30, 2026, and that current flooding patterns were consistent with the ongoing rainy season rather than a dam-related surge.
The agency said it continues to monitor water levels along the Benue and Niger river systems and will issue updated advisories should the situation change. State emergency management agencies have been urged to remain on alert regardless of the clarification, given the risk of seasonal flooding.
