Nigerian Army's X Account Hacked Again in Second Breach in Two Weeks

The Nigerian Army has reported an attempted unauthorised access to its official X account, marking the second cyber breach involving a Nigerian military social media account in about two weeks.

The Nigerian Army has reported an attempted unauthorised access to its official X account, marking the second reported cyber breach involving a Nigerian military social media account in about two weeks.

The Army's account began publishing memecoin-related updates at about 3:50pm on Saturday, August 29, 2026, before the development was flagged as a cybersecurity incident. The Acting Director, Army Public Relations, Appolonia Anele, confirmed the incident in a statement, saying immediate technical and protective measures had been activated to secure the account and prevent further unauthorised access.

The incident follows a similar breach of the Defence Headquarters' X account on August 15, 2026, when hackers pushed a cryptocurrency scam to nearly one million followers before control was restored. No attacker has been identified in either case. The Army has advised the public to disregard any suspicious or unauthorised content from the affected account.
