Gunfire, Explosions Rock Niger Republic's Capital Niamey Near Airport, Presidential Palace

Sustained gunfire and explosions rocked Niamey, capital of Niger Republic, early Saturday, with fighting reported near the international airport, a military base and the presidential district.

Sustained gunfire and explosions rocked Niamey, the capital of Niger Republic, in the early hours of Saturday, August 29, 2026, with witnesses reporting heavy fighting near the Diori Hamani International Airport, a military base and the district housing the presidential palace.

According to Reuters witnesses, sustained gunfire began shortly after 1:00am around the airport, which hosts a major military installation, while gunshots also rang out from the Plateau administrative district. Security forces were deployed and a major road leading into the capital was closed as searches continued into Saturday morning.

It is the third such incident to hit the airport area this year. Niger has been ruled by a military junta led by General Abdourahamane Tiani since a July 2023 coup, and the country continues to battle armed groups linked to al-Qaeda and the Islamic State. No casualty figures were immediately available.
